One of the things that I love about blogging is that it inspires you to try new things! So here is something I tried today, baking dog biscuits from scratch. The how-to is after the jump.
You will need:
1 c of rolled oats
2 packets or cubes of beef bullion
1/3 c vegetable shortening
1 c water, boiling
1 c cheddar cheese, shredded
3/4 c cornmeal
2 t sugar
1/2 c milk
1 lg egg, slightly beaten
3 c whole wheat flour, spooned & leveled + more for the countertop.
Pre-heat your oven to 325 F & put the kettle on to boil
Mix together the oats & bullion, add shortening & carefully pour in the boiling water, stir and let sit a few minutes.
meanwhile, you can grate your cheese.
Add the cheese, cornmeal, sugar, and milk, mix well, then add the egg. Gradually add the flour and then turn the dough out onto a generously floured countertop
now is a good time for your fuzzy assistant to lick the spoon.
kneed the dough, adding flour if needed
roll it out, about a 1/4" thick
cut (I couldn't find my bone cutter so I made stars!)
place on parchment lined baking sheets. Trust me, you will be happy you used parchment. Nothing sticks!
This recipe made about 2 1/2 dozen stars. I used two baking sheets, rotating them in the oven 1/2 way through baking so they would cook evenly
bake about 40 minutes, cool and enjoy!
Woofs is looking for seconds.
These are not going to keep like commercial biscuits, so it's best to wrap 1/2 and bring them to your neighbor
oh, and clean up your mess
