A while back I met this guy at a convenience store near my home. He was a little shy at first. Naturally, the more I talked to him the friendlier he became. We'd run into each other in the mornings & evenings when I stopped. He seemed to just live down there.
One September morning he even let me take his picture
Look at those eyes.
I started to notice that he was living on his own. Store employees and kind souls would feed him daily, but he had no safe place to rest his little head.
The end of last week, I was sitting outside with him, feeding him some sort of meat pate from my finger tips. I saw that the red ants would swarm at his food if it was unattended for more than a few minutes. They would nip at his little paws while he ate. You know how terrible those fire ant bites can be.
I came back later with some more food, I was looking for a sign. He started cuddling with me and I knew. I knew that I needed to try to find him a better life than this one that he was living. I knew he deserved a better life than this.
That evening, I had a $2 make shift litter box, a couple cans of cat food and a cat living in my bathroom (and a husband who's allergic!). I emailed APAC right away and they were able to give me official word that Professor Whiskers is going to be an Almost Foster!
Well I am geeking out (not exactly out of character). In a few short days, this tiny Professor has me wrapped around his fuzzy little tail.
Today, we got him his vaccinations. He did awesome. Not even one tiny mew! He just stayed snuggled on my lap.
Tomorrow, I bring him to the Temple Animal Shelter for his neuter surgery and he will be staying there until he finds a foster family (or better still, his forever family)
I will miss the sweet Professor Whiskers; the feel of his sand-papery tongue, when he licks my hand; the way he relishes every bite of his supper; his beautiful, soft fur with it's pumpkin spice colored patches.
I think the thing I will miss the most though, is the way he looks at me. A cat who truely appreciates all that he has in life, and asks for nothing more than a comfy spot to sleep, some shredded chicken and a few scratches under his chin.
